Religion in Laos

Religion in Laos is predominantly Theravada Buddhist, while many communities also combine Buddhist practice with animist and ancestor beliefs. The 2015 census recorded 64.7% Buddhist, 1.7% Christian and 31.4% reporting no religion, including animist beliefs. Religious practice is protected by law but remains subject to registration, approval and local administrative control. A wat, the Lao term for a Buddhist temple, is a central place for merit-making, rites and monastic life.
