Politics in Laos

Politics in Laos operates through a constitutional state framework and an electoral system. The Constitution defines Laos as a people's democratic state and identifies the Lao People's Revolutionary Party as its leading core. The National Assembly makes laws and oversees state bodies, while the Government directs public administration. Elections select representatives for the National Assembly and Provincial People's Councils.

State

The State in Laos is organised as a people's democratic state under the Constitution, with the Lao People's Revolutionary Party as its constitutional leading core. The National Assembly makes laws, approves the budget and oversees state bodies, while the Government directs unified public administration. Laos uses the Lao language and script officially, has Vientiane Capital as its capital and uses the kip as its currency.

Elections

Elections in Laos choose representatives to the unicameral National Assembly and, in a parallel ballot, members of Provincial People’s Councils. National Assembly elections use direct, equal and secret voting in 18 constituencies, with 175 seats allocated to the candidates receiving the highest vote totals in each constituency. The National Election Committee organizes and verifies the process, while the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party remains the constitutionally leading political force.
