Apprenticeship in Latvia

In Latvia, apprenticeship is usually understood through vocational education and work-based learning. The Latvian term darba vidē balstītas mācības means learning based in a real working environment. Vocational education is offered mainly by vocational schools and other professional education institutions. Programs may begin after basic education or form part of later training for adults. A learner studies general subjects, professional theory, and practical skills. The balance depends on the occupation and program, but both school learning and workplace experience are important. Practical training may take place in school workshops, at a company, or in both settings. In work-based learning, the school, learner, and employer coordinate what must be learned and how progress is assessed. Programs can prepare learners for occupations in fields such as construction, technology, transport, services, crafts, agriculture, and health-related support work. Available occupations depend on the schools and employers in each region. Completion normally requires passing the program's assessments and demonstrating occupational competence. A successful learner may receive an education document and a recognized professional qualification. Vocational graduates may enter employment, continue at a higher professional level, or pursue higher education when their previous education gives access. The route is therefore not necessarily a final educational stop. Workplace learning offers real experience and contact with employers, but its quality depends on suitable supervision and meaningful tasks. Learners should confirm what the school teaches, what the company provides, and which qualification the program awards.
