School in Latvia

Latvia's school system begins with preschool and continues through basic and secondary education. Public authorities set the main education framework, while municipalities and other founders operate individual schools. Basic education is called pamatizglītība. It gives children a broad foundation in language, mathematics, science, society, arts, technology, health, and physical activity. After basic education, learners may choose general secondary education or vocational secondary education. General programs mainly prepare students for further study, while vocational programs combine general subjects with preparation for an occupation. Latvian is the central language of the public education system. Some schools or programs may also have a particular language profile, but families should verify the actual language used for teaching, communication, and assessment. Schools follow national expectations but differ in size, educational emphasis, facilities, extracurricular activities, and available support. A child's declared residence and local arrangements may affect which municipal school is available. Learning is assessed through schoolwork, tests, projects, and formal examinations at important completion stages. The exact assessment plan is explained by the school and may differ by grade and program. Schools can provide or coordinate support for learning, language development, health, social needs, and special educational needs. The appropriate support depends on an individual assessment and the resources available at the school. A student arriving from another country may need to present identity and previous education documents. The school or responsible education authority places the student by considering age, prior learning, language ability, and practical circumstances. School provides a stable learning path and a community, but successful participation also depends on attendance, communication, and help at home. Families should contact the school early whenever a child is struggling or an important circumstance changes.
