Study in Latvia

Higher education in Latvia is called augstākā izglītība. It is provided by universities and other higher education institutions, commonly called augstskolas, as well as colleges called koledžas. Programs may have an academic or professional orientation. Academic study emphasizes theory and research, while professional study connects academic knowledge with preparation for a particular field of work. The main study progression includes first-cycle, second-cycle, and doctoral education. Some professional routes have their own structure, so applicants should compare the actual qualification and access to later study. Admission normally depends on completed prior education and the requirements of the chosen program. Institutions may consider school results, examinations, portfolios, interviews, entrance tests, language ability, or previous higher education. Programs are taught mainly in Latvian, but some are available in English or another language. Applicants should confirm the teaching language for the full program, not only for promotional or introductory materials. Study may include lectures, seminars, laboratory work, projects, placements, independent reading, and examinations. Professional programs often include practical training connected to the intended occupation. A recognized institution does not automatically mean that every program has the same status or outcome. Applicants should verify the specific program, awarded degree or qualification, and any professional recognition needed for regulated work. Students may study with public funding in some circumstances or pay tuition, depending on the program and their status. They should also plan for housing, transport, food, study materials, insurance, and possible residence formalities. Higher education can expand knowledge, career options, and professional networks, but it requires time, independent work, and financial planning. A careful program comparison is more useful than choosing only by institution name or city.
