Languages in Latvia

Latvian is the state language of Latvia. It is used in public administration, official communication, most public education, and many workplaces. The Latvian name for the language is latviešu valoda. It belongs to the Baltic language family and uses the Latin alphabet with additional marks that affect pronunciation and meaning. Latvia is multilingual in daily life. Adults can learn through courses, private teaching, self-study, conversation groups, and daily practice. Knowing Latvian makes it easier to understand letters, speak with schools and doctors, use services, build relationships, and find a wider range of work. Progress is usually fastest when structured study is combined with frequent real-life use. Language learning takes time, and mistakes are a normal part of it. A learner should focus first on useful situations and seek qualified advice if an official certificate or a particular proficiency level is required.
