Lebanon has mountains, a long coastline, crowded cities, and many settlements on steep land. These features create different hazards, including earthquakes, forest fires, sudden flooding, landslides, storms, and heavy snow in higher areas. Earthquakes are an important background risk because Lebanon lies near active fault systems. Strong shaking may damage buildings, roads, electricity, water systems, and phone networks even when the earthquake begins elsewhere in the region. Wildfires occur mainly in wooded, grassy, and agricultural areas during hot and dry conditions. Smoke can also affect communities far from the flames, while narrow roads and steep slopes can make evacuation and firefighting difficult. Intense rain can overwhelm drainage systems and produce fast local flooding. Mountain roads may become unsafe because of falling rocks, mud, snow, or landslides, and coastal storms can disrupt travel and damage exposed property. Major building fires, explosions, hazardous-material incidents, and failures of essential infrastructure are human-made emergencies. Dense neighborhoods and weakly maintained structures can increase the harm caused by such events. Lebanese Civil Defense, the Lebanese Red Cross, security services, hospitals, municipalities, and other public bodies may respond according to the event. Volunteer groups, charities, neighborhood networks, and international organizations may also provide rescue, shelter, medical care, food, or other support. Warnings and instructions may come through authorities, municipalities, news media, phone messages, community groups, or people nearby. Information can be incomplete during a crisis, so instructions should be checked against more than one trusted channel when possible. Preparedness reduces confusion but cannot remove every danger. A household plan should cover safe exits, a meeting place, essential medicines, children, older people, disabilities, pets, and a contact outside the immediate area. After a disaster, damaged buildings, broken cables, leaking fuel, contaminated water, unstable slopes, and unexploded objects can remain dangerous. People should avoid damaged zones, follow official safety directions, document losses when safe, and seek qualified help before returning to a seriously affected building.
