Housing in Lebanon

Housing conditions vary greatly between Beirut, its suburbs, coastal cities, mountain towns, and villages. Location affects space, climate, transport, services, noise, and cost. People find homes through personal contacts, local agents, signs, online listings, employers, universities, and community networks. A recommendation is useful, but the property and agreement still require direct inspection. Rent is called ijar in Arabic. Agreements may differ in length, currency, payment schedule, deposit, included furniture, maintenance duties, and conditions for leaving. Electricity is a central housing question because public supply may not cover every hour. Buildings or neighborhoods may use generators, batteries, solar systems, or combinations of several sources. Water can come through public supply, building storage tanks, private delivery, wells, or other arrangements. Ask about drinking water separately because household tap water is not automatically treated as potable. Heating and cooling needs change by region and season. Mountain homes can be cold and damp, while coastal homes may face heat, humidity, and limited ventilation. Building charges may cover common electricity, lifts, cleaning, security, water pumps, maintenance, or other shared services. Confirm what each charge includes and how it is calculated. Inspect doors, locks, windows, plumbing, damp, appliances, mobile reception, internet options, noise, parking, and emergency exits. Test important items rather than accepting a verbal assurance. A written inventory and photographs protect both tenant and landlord. Record existing damage, meter information, keys, furniture, equipment, payments, and the process for repairs.
