Transport in Lebanon

Lebanon’s transport system is a mixture of private and public services. There is no single nationwide passenger network with one map, timetable, ticket, and standard level of service. Private cars are widely used because they offer flexibility. Their disadvantages include congestion, parking difficulty, fuel costs, road hazards, and the need to understand local driving behavior. A service is usually a shared taxi operating along an understood route or within an area. A regular private taxi is hired for the passenger’s own trip, so the service type and price should be agreed before departure. Buses and vans connect parts of Beirut, suburbs, other cities, towns, and villages. Stops and routes may be informal, and vehicles may collect or drop passengers at familiar roadside points. Applications, telephone dispatch, hotels, and trusted local drivers can provide private rides. Identity, vehicle, destination, and price should be checked, especially for an unfamiliar or late journey. Traffic can be heavy and unpredictable, particularly around Beirut and major roads. Distance alone is therefore a poor guide to arrival time. Road quality, lighting, signs, lane discipline, and pedestrian facilities vary. Pedestrians should cross cautiously, and drivers should expect motorcycles, sudden stops, and mixed road users. Motorcycles and scooters can move through congestion but expose riders to serious injury. A suitable helmet, visible clothing, controlled speed, and defensive riding are basic protections. Transport planning should include a return option and enough telephone power. Weather, local disruptions, demonstrations, accidents, or road closures can require a different route.
