Immigration law in Lebanon

Lebanon’s immigration system distinguishes between entry, residence, work, and nationality. A person may need separate approvals for these different purposes, and one approval does not automatically create another. General Security, commonly called Sûreté Générale, is the main authority for border control, visas, residence status, and many matters concerning foreign nationals. Other public bodies become involved when employment, civil records, or nationality questions arise. Entry conditions depend on nationality, travel documents, purpose of travel, and personal circumstances. A visa may be required before travel or handled through another authorized process, but admission at the border remains an official decision. A foreign national who stays beyond a short visit generally needs a valid basis for residence. Common bases include employment, family connection, study, or another officially accepted purpose. The right to work is separate from the right to stay. Foreign workers commonly need employment authorization involving the labor authorities, and the process may also depend on an employer or sponsor. Some work arrangements in Lebanon use sponsorship structures that give the employer substantial practical control. This is especially important for migrant domestic workers, whose employment and immigration position may not match the ordinary Labour Code system. Family connection can support some residence applications, but marriage or Lebanese ancestry does not always create automatic residence or nationality. Lebanon’s nationality system has its own rules, and outcomes may differ according to the precise family line and legal facts. Overstay, unauthorized work, missing documents, or inconsistent records can cause fines, detention, removal, or difficulty with later applications.
