Language in Lesotho

Lesotho's language landscape combines Sesotho, English, regional and minority languages, and Lesotho Sign Language across public life. Since 13 August 2025, Sesotho, English, isiXhosa, isiPhuthi and sign language have official-language status for legislative, administrative and judicial processes, official documents and education. Sesotho dominates everyday life, local administration, radio and culture, while English remains central to formal writing, higher education, law and professional work. The legal framework has expanded language access, but implementation for all five official languages remains uneven.
