Traditions in Libya

Intangible cultural heritage, called التراث الثقافي غير المادي in Arabic, describes living practices and knowledge that communities recognize and pass on. In Libya, transmission is mainly informal and family-based, often involving grandparents, women’s networks, craftspeople, ensembles and local festivals. Arabic, Amazigh, Tuareg or Tamasheq, and Tebu contexts can use different names and forms for related practices. Participation depends on the family, community, language, gender, age and occasion; no general national permission is required, and no person has a blanket duty to follow every tradition. Weddings are among the most significant living traditions. Families may reach agreement on the marriage and mahr, while stages and objects can include الفضائية as an early formal negotiation or hosting stage, البيان as an engagement announcement or ring exchange, and customs such as القفة, النجمة, المحضر and الجلوة. Traditional bridal clothing includes التكليلة and بدلة الحصيرة. The الزيانة historically accompanied and dressed the bride, while rental shops and stylists now perform some of these services. Birth celebrations, circumcision and mourning are also organized mainly by families and communities, but Libya has no single nationally uniform sequence for them. Seasonal and community events provide visible settings for local traditions. The Houn Autumn Festival in October and November connects date harvesting with songs, dance and local performances. Ghadames Shopping and Heritage Days in October include stories, singing, dancing, desert races and souq activities. The Fezzan Desert Rally takes place in January, the Waddan Desert Rally in November and the Qaraqara Dunes Marathon in April. Sukna’s ملاقاة الربيع is a two-day spring festival with folk art, poetry, riders, traditional clothing and jewellery, and food competitions. Ramadan and Eid celebrations belong primarily to religious practice, but their social gatherings and heritage scenes can also show Libyan customs. Traditional clothing is especially visible at weddings, festivals, prayer and heritage events. Men’s garments may include the jalabiya, sirwal, sadriya, farmla, jarid or jard, and shashiya. Women’s garments may include the farashiya, sudra, hasira, الحولي, العبروق and الرداء. Colours, materials, embroidery and jewellery vary by region and social setting; black shashiyas are common in Tripolitania, while black and red forms occur in Cyrenaica. Urban everyday clothing is increasingly western in style, but traditional dress is being renewed through fashion, festivals and old-medina events. Libyan music and oral traditions include Maluf and Andalusi music, Chabi, local songs and dances, popular poetry, proverbs and stories. Instruments include the rababa, oud, rebab, qanun, daf, tabl and mizmar. Tuareg and Tamasheq communities in the south use forms such as tende and imzad music with handclapping. Families, ensembles, festivals and cultural centres support transmission, although institutional support is uneven; the National Folk Arts Festival returned in 2026 after about 25 years, bringing together 12 groups from several regions for six days. Craft traditions remain locally organized. Examples include pottery from Gharyan; leatherwork from Ghadames, Ghat, Jufra, Benghazi and Jabal al-Akhdar; wool work from Jabal al-Gharbi, Misrata, Tripoli and Bani Walid; palm-leaf work from Tawergha, Wadi al-Hayat, Murzuq, Ghadames and Jufra; and woodwork, metalwork, jewellery and musical-instrument making in several cities. Products such as naluti and ghadamesi leather goods, balgha, sandals, saddles, water containers and tents reach people through markets, workshops, training centres and festivals. Prices and availability vary by maker, region and event, with no national standard tariff. Regional identity is central to Libyan traditions. Tripolitania and the western regions, Cyrenaica and Barqa, and Fezzan and the south have distinct cultural settings shaped by cities, oases, coasts, deserts and community histories. Amazigh, Tuareg, Tebu, Arab and Bedouin communities maintain their own languages, clothing, music, crafts and celebrations rather than forming one homogeneous national tradition. Tebu festivals, for example, can combine clothing, dance, language, crafts and folk objects. Libya ratified the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage on 10 November 2023 and became a State Party on 10 February 2024. Arabic Kohl is one Libyan element on the UNESCO Representative List in 2025; its black cosmetic powder is used in everyday life and at special or religious occasions, and the knowledge is often passed from mother to daughter or granddaughter. Arabian horses, Al sanbouk and Nabati Arabic poetry were part of multinational nominations planned for 2027 and should not be described as already inscribed Libyan elements. The Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development, the Ministry of Tourism and Traditional Industries, the Libyan Authority for Heritage and Wildlife, the Libyan National Commission for Education, Science and Culture, municipalities, associations and UNESCO-related bodies can contribute to documentation, protection, funding and transmission. Community participation and consent matter when traditions are inventoried. Urbanization, western clothing, online shopping, rented festival clothing, commercialized weddings, rising costs, migration, displacement, conflict and institutional instability can weaken intergenerational transmission. Heritage days, festivals, school and cultural programmes, local training centres and documentation projects support renewal, but these activities do not prove that every tradition is preserved nationwide. Traditions connected mainly with religious doctrine, legal status, divorce or inheritance belong to religion or law, while food and cooking remain secondary here unless they form part of a wedding or festival custom.
