Language in Libya

Arabic is Libya’s official state language and the main language of formal administration, law, education and national public communication. Libyan Arabic is the everyday lingua franca, while Amazigh, Tuareg or Tamahaq, and Tebu languages remain important in specific regions and communities. Libya has no current national language census, so reliable nationwide speaker percentages are unavailable. Language rights exist in law, but minority-language education, media and public services are unevenly implemented.
