Study in Lithuania

Higher education in Lithuania follows a cycle-based structure. The main study cycles lead through first-cycle, second-cycle, and doctoral education. Universities, known as universitetai, combine teaching with research and offer academically oriented programmes. They can provide studies across all major cycles when authorised to do so. Colleges of applied sciences, known as kolegijos, concentrate on professionally oriented first-cycle study and practical preparation. Their graduates can continue toward later university study when they meet the relevant admission conditions. A first-cycle programme normally leads to a bachelor-level qualification. Integrated programmes may combine more than one cycle for certain regulated professional fields. Second-cycle studies lead to a master-level qualification and usually require a suitable earlier degree. Doctoral study is research-focused and requires advanced preparation and admission to an approved doctoral field. Programmes may be taught in Lithuanian or another language, especially English. Applicants must prove that they can study in the programme’s teaching language by the method accepted by the institution. Application normally involves selecting a programme, checking entry subjects and qualifications, submitting education documents, and completing any required recognition or selection steps. Applicants educated abroad may need formal evaluation of their qualifications. Study includes lectures, seminars, independent work, assessment, and often practical placements or research. Academic honesty, attendance rules, credit completion, and deadlines are essential parts of student responsibility. Higher education can open professional, research, and international opportunities, but a degree does not guarantee a particular job. Applicants should compare curriculum, practical experience, qualification type, language, total costs, and progression options before accepting a place.
