Common housing words include casa for house, departamento or depa for apartment, cuarto for room, renta for rent, and arrendamiento for a rental agreement. A room may be rented with shared kitchen or bathroom facilities. The neighborhood matters as much as the building. Check distance to work, school, shops, healthcare, public transport, noise, flooding, heat, and access to daily services. Before renting, inspect water pressure, electricity, locks, windows, appliances, internet options, and signs of dampness or pests. Visit at more than one time of day if possible. Ask which services are included in the rent. Common household costs can include electricity, water, gas, internet, maintenance, parking, and building fees. Read the agreement before paying a deposit or signing. Confirm the rent, deposit, duration, notice process, repairs, inventory, guests, pets, and permitted use. A landlord or property manager may request identification, proof of income, references, or a guarantor. Requirements differ, and a trustworthy arrangement should be clear about every payment. Record the condition of the home when you move in. Take dated photographs and keep copies of the agreement, receipts, keys, meter readings, and messages. If a repair affects safety, water, electricity, or habitability, report it promptly in writing. Keep communication calm and organized, and seek local advice if a serious dispute cannot be resolved.
