History in Mozambique

Mozambique's history spans long-established African societies, Indian Ocean trade, Portuguese colonial rule, the independence struggle and the post-independence state. The country became independent on 25 June 1975 and later experienced a civil war that ended with the 1992 General Peace Agreement. Archaeology, oral histories, written records and political archives reveal different parts of this history.
