Transport in Myanmar

Transport governance in Myanmar is divided among several bodies. The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MOTC) coordinates the sector. The Road Transport Administration Department (RTAD) handles vehicle registration, inspections, renewals and driving licences. Myanma Railways provides passenger and freight rail services. Inland Water Transport (IWT) manages inland passenger, cargo and ferry services. The Department of Civil Aviation oversees aviation, while the Myanmar Port Authority handles port and maritime functions. Regional and municipal bodies manage many urban services; in Yangon, the Yangon Region Public Transport Committee (YRTC) oversees the Yangon Bus Service and its private companies. Public transport is city- and corridor-specific. YBS is a formal bus network in Yangon, with payment by cash and, on some services, YPS or card systems. Myanmar has no nationwide fare or frequency standard, so passengers should check the current service, boarding point, payment method and fare with the relevant company or local authority. Outside Yangon, buses, minibuses, taxis, trishaws, motorcycles and informal services fill different transport needs. Accessibility for disabled passengers is not consistently built into vehicles, stops or stations. Myanma Railways serves major connections including Yangon–Mandalay, Yangon–Bagan, Yangon–Pyay and Yangon–Mawlamyine, together with regional and RBE services. Journey speed, reliability and infrastructure vary considerably. Upper-class tickets can be bought up to three months in advance and ordinary tickets up to one month in advance. Same-day sales generally begin at 07:00 and continue until ten minutes before departure. A child ticket applies from age three to under twelve. Passengers should verify the current departure time, ticket availability and any service change at the station or through the current railway source. Road transport is the most widely used daily and intercity option. Vehicles drive on the right, although many imported vehicles have right-hand steering. Legal driving generally requires a valid driving licence, a registered vehicle, an issued number plate and current inspection and registration documents. RTAD requirements include registration, annual renewal and inspection. Motorcycle riders and passengers should use a standard helmet with a secured chinstrap. Seat belts apply where prescribed, mobile-phone use while driving is prohibited, and unregistered vehicles must not be used. Local authorities may impose motorcycle restrictions, so the applicable municipal rule should be checked. Road quality, lighting, lane markings, shoulders and roadside assistance are uneven. Night driving, heavy rain and remote roads create higher practical risks. Cycling and walking remain common for short trips, especially outside dense central corridors, but protected cycle infrastructure is not evidenced nationally. People walking or cycling often share space with motor traffic, and crossings, sidewalks, lighting and accessibility vary. Junctions and highways can expose pedestrians to significant traffic risk, while priority and enforcement differ by location. Express Bus and other highway bus services are the main practical intercity choice on many corridors. Rail provides an alternative where the railway connection is suitable, although it is often slower and less reliable. Domestic aviation can be useful for selected long distances. IWT is especially relevant on navigable parts of the Ayeyarwady, Chindwin and Thanlwin rivers, in the delta and on waterways in Rakhine. Ferry crossings and private boats also provide functional connections, but departure times, safety standards and life-jacket availability vary. Fares, booking rules, baggage conditions, cancellation terms, frequency and journey duration depend on the company, service and corridor. Local services may require cash or street-level boarding, while formal services may require a ticket and identification. Foreign self-drive licence and permit requirements vary and should be confirmed with the current authority before driving. Regional security controls, checkpoints, closures, weather and changing service conditions can affect access and departure times, so current confirmation matters more than an old timetable or fare. Motorisation, congestion, emissions, noise and traffic injuries are documented urban transport problems. The Road Safety and Motor Vehicle Management Law includes pollution-reduction objectives for air, water, soil and noise. Rail, public transport, walking, cycling and water transport can offer lower-emission alternatives in suitable circumstances, but no current nationwide dataset reliably compares every mode. Transport information is fragmented across national, regional and municipal bodies, and service conditions can change quickly.
