Transport in Nauru

Nauru's main land connection is the Island Ring Road, which is paved in important sections; other roads can be unpaved. Private cars and motorcycles dominate everyday transport. In 2019, Nauru recorded 4,431 vehicles, including 2,181 private cars, 1,035 private motorcycles, 537 government vehicles and 675 commercial vehicles. Rental cars are locally available, and the government provides information about rental arrangements. There is no organized roadside breakdown service, so drivers need to plan for vehicle problems themselves. A regular public transport service is not currently documented. Nauru's Nationally Determined Contribution referred to 16 buses, but no published service, operating schedule or regular passenger service has been verified. Two electric buses and a fast-charging station were procured through the DCCNR/SMARTEN programme. One electric bus was launched in Yaren in December 2024, and both buses underwent test runs in May 2025 to assess power, driver handling and suitability for local roads. A wider plan refers to 10 electric buses and four fast chargers, but this remains planned rather than a confirmed operating system. No regular taxi service has been documented, so local travel generally depends on a private vehicle, a rental car or any future or pilot bus service. Nauru has no current local passenger railway. Road travel, air travel and maritime freight therefore provide the relevant transport alternatives. Nauru International Airport supports Nauru Airlines services linking Naoero with Brisbane, Tarawa, Majuro, Pohnpei, Nadi and Suva. Kiritimati services have been operated on behalf of Air Kiribati. The Nauru Airlines schedule for 8 to 30 September 2026 is only a guide because runway works have caused delays and a revised plan is expected in early 2027. The airport project includes runway resurfacing, air-traffic-control upgrades and new fencing; three unexploded ordnance items were removed from beneath the runway. Flight prices vary, and Nauru has no single local airfares tariff. Aiwo Port is Nauru's only documented international maritime access. The Nauru Maritime and Port Authority manages port functions involving containers, bulk cargo, phosphate, fuel and other supplies. Nauru Shipping Line vessels, including Micronesian Pride and Micronesian Ocean, support freight movement; Micronesian Ocean arrived at Aiwo in August 2025 with capacity for 614 containers. No regular passenger ferry service has been documented. Port access is authorized and follows International Ship and Port Facility Security requirements. Standard operating hours are Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 17:00, with special handling requiring approval. The Motor Traffic Act 2014 requires drivers to keep and drive on the left. Drivers overtake on the right, and a U-turn requires clear visibility and a safe opportunity. Drivers need a valid licence for the relevant vehicle class and must carry and present it when required. A learner permit does not allow driving from 19:00 to 07:00. Speed limits, night lighting, motorcycle helmets, seat belts and child seating rules also apply. When a school bus is loading or unloading passengers, the maximum speed is 16 km/h. Authorized Nauru Police Force officers can conduct impairment testing for alcohol using two separate tests. Penalties can include fixed, court and additional penalty amounts. Examples include a total of $250 for driving without a valid licence, $400 for failing to present a foreign licence, $500 for a speeding offence and $700 for an unregistered vehicle, with the last example also involving impoundment. After 24 hours, weekly impound charges are $30 for motorcycles, $100 for cars and buses, $75 for trailers and $50 for other vehicles. Rain can make driving conditions difficult, especially on roads that are not paved. After dark, drivers also need to account for animals and pedestrians on the road. Separate pedestrian infrastructure and accessibility facilities are not reliably documented, although short walking trips are functionally possible. Transport remains heavily dependent on imported fuel. Light vehicles mainly use petrol, while diesel use has increased since 2017. Nauru's planning documents propose electric vehicles, electric buses, electric bicycles and electric scooters. One planning table describes targets for 2030 of 40% electric motorcycles, 10% electric cars, 25% electric vans and 30% electric buses, alongside 700 electric bicycles; another text uses a 2035 horizon for a 20% electric-vehicle share. These are planning or model values, not live measurements. The stated modelling suggests a possible 26.4% reduction in fuel use and a 20.7% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions if the roadmap is implemented. No regular bike-sharing service or established cycling network has been verified. Walking and cycling also require extra care at night, during rain and where traffic, animals or road conditions reduce safety.
