Language in Nepal

Nepal has a highly diverse language landscape with 124 languages reported as mother tongues in the 2021 census. The Constitution recognizes every language spoken in Nepal as a national language, while Nepali in Devanagari is the federal official language. Provinces may add majority languages through provincial law, but formal recognition does not guarantee a school, translation or public service in that language everywhere.
