Language in Nicaragua

Spanish is Nicaragua’s official state language and the main language of administration, national education, politics, media and transport. In the Costa Caribe, Spanish and several community languages have official status under the autonomy framework. Miskitu, Kriol, Mayangna, Ulwa, Rama and Garífuna remain especially relevant in local education, justice, culture and public participation. Access to these languages varies by region, institution and available staff.
