Shopping in South Korea

South Korea has several overlapping shopping systems. Traditional markets, neighborhood shops, supermarkets, department stores, shopping centers, convenience stores, and online services each fill a different role. Traditional markets are called 시장. They often offer produce, prepared food, household goods, clothing, or specialist products, although the mix differs by market. Convenience stores are widespread and sell basic food, drinks, household necessities, and simple services. They are useful for urgent purchases but are not always the most economical choice for a large basket. Supermarkets and large retail stores are easier for planned household shopping. Department stores usually emphasize branded goods, food halls, customer service, and a more formal shopping experience. Prices are normally displayed clearly in fixed-price stores. Bargaining is uncommon in ordinary retail and should not be assumed even in a traditional market. Cards and mobile payments are common, but cash remains useful in some small businesses and markets. Foreign cards may not work with every terminal or online checkout. Online shopping is deeply integrated into daily life and often provides fast delivery. Registration, a local telephone number, Korean payment methods, or local identity verification can be obstacles for newcomers. Returns, exchanges, warranties, and delivery conditions depend on the seller and product. Keeping receipts, packaging, order records, and photographs makes a problem easier to resolve.
