Employment in Romania

An employee in Romania normally works under an individual employment contract, known locally as a contract individual de muncă, or CIM. The employee performs agreed work for an employer and receives a salary under the employer’s direction. The contract should state the position, duties, workplace, working time, salary, leave, notice rules, and other important conditions. Both sides should understand the document before work begins and keep a copy. Employment may be for an unlimited period or, in permitted situations, for a fixed period. A full-time contract covers the normal agreed schedule, while a part-time contract states fewer working hours and should describe how those hours are arranged. The employer handles the formal registration of the employment relationship and normally withholds or reports the required taxes and social contributions. These contributions support areas such as health care, pensions, and unemployment protection. Employees have basic protections concerning safe work, rest, paid annual leave, equal treatment, and payment of the agreed salary. Some jobs also have rules about professional qualification, confidentiality, safety training, or medical fitness. A probation period may be included within the legal framework. During this time, the employer and employee can assess whether the job is suitable, but the employee still has basic workplace protections. Employment can end by agreement, resignation, dismissal under applicable rules, or the natural end of a fixed-term contract. Notice, written documents, and special protections may apply depending on the situation. If a problem appears, the employee should first collect the contract, payslips, schedules, messages, and other evidence.
