Unemployment in Romania

A person is generally unemployed in Romania when they do not have a job and are available to work. The local word is șomaj, while a job seeker may be called a persoană în căutarea unui loc de muncă. Public employment services are organized through the National Employment Agency, ANOFM, and its county or Bucharest offices, AJOFM. These services connect job seekers with vacancies and can provide guidance about work and training. A job seeker may register with the relevant office and present documents about identity, education, work history, and the end of the previous job. The exact documents and process can depend on the person’s situation. Possible support includes information about vacancies, career counselling, vocational training, help with preparing for interviews, and referrals to employers. Not every service is available in the same way to every person. Unemployment benefit is a separate form of support from simply being without a job. Eligibility can depend on previous insured work, how employment ended, registration, and other legal conditions. A person receiving support usually needs to remain available for work and follow the responsibilities explained by the employment office. Missing required appointments or refusing suitable steps can affect support. People who are not eligible for a benefit may still use some public employment services. They can also search through personal networks, company career pages, recruitment services, and local community organizations. The first practical goal is to secure income, documents, and a realistic job-search routine. A clear CV, proof of qualifications, and regular applications make the search easier to manage.
