Apprenticeship in Samoa

Samoa's closest equivalents to an apprenticeship include technical and vocational education and training (TVET), workplace learning, internships and employer-linked traineeships. Formal programmes commonly lead to certificate- or diploma-level qualifications. National University of Samoa (NUS), especially the NUS Institute of Technology (NUS-IT) and Samoa Polytechnic, provides central public options, while other accredited providers, employers and project-based programmes may offer additional pathways. The Samoa Qualifications Authority (SQA) manages the qualifications framework, accreditation, quality assurance and recognition of qualifications. The Ministry of Education and Culture (MESC) is responsible for education policy and oversight. A programme's occupational relevance and formal value depend on its provider, programme status, qualification title, level, credits and recognition arrangements. Check these details with the provider and SQA rather than relying on the word apprenticeship alone. Entry requirements vary by programme. A provider may require a minimum age, a school qualification, an entrance assessment or occupation-specific health or subject requirements. Programmes combine theory and practice differently: a course may use campus instruction, practical sessions, workplace learning or an internship. There is no single national apprenticeship duration; certificate and diploma programmes have their own schedules and may offer progression or articulation to a higher qualification.
