Employment in Serbia

In Serbia, employment means that a person works for an employer in an organized relationship and receives pay. The usual local terms are radni odnos for the employment relationship and zaposleni for an employee. The main document is the ugovor o radu, or employment contract. It normally states the job, workplace, start date, pay, working time, and basic rights and duties. A formal employee should be registered for compulsory social insurance before or when work begins. This supports access to pension, health, and other social protections connected with employment. Pay is usually shown through payroll records and paid into the employee's account. The employer handles the required calculations and contributions, while the employee should receive understandable information about the agreed net and gross amounts. Work is normally organized through agreed working hours, instructions, and supervision. Overtime, night work, rest periods, and safety rules should be handled according to the contract and applicable Serbian rules. Employees may have rights to annual leave, sick leave, public holidays, and protection at work. The exact amount and procedure can depend on the contract, workplace, and current law. Employment can end through resignation, agreement, expiry of a fixed-term contract, or an employer decision based on a lawful reason. Written notices and final payroll documents are important when the relationship ends. Informal work without proper registration can make it harder to prove pay, service time, insurance, and other rights. Keeping the contract, payslips, registration evidence, and important messages is therefore useful.
