Crime in Slovenia

The Slovenian police, or Policija, are responsible for public safety, preventing crime, responding to incidents, and investigating suspected offences. Slovenian law distinguishes between criminal offences, called kazniva dejanja, and misdemeanors, called prekrški. The exact legal classification depends on the facts, the harm, and the applicable law, so a person should describe what happened rather than trying to choose the legal label. Call 113 when urgent police action is needed, such as during violence, a serious threat, a crime in progress, or an immediate risk to people or property. Call 112 when there is immediate danger involving several emergency services, such as a serious accident, fire, or medical crisis. For a non-urgent matter, a person can contact a police station and make a report. Police may record information, take statements, collect evidence, identify involved people, and forward the case to the competent authorities. Useful evidence can include messages, photographs, videos, names of witnesses, transaction records, medical papers, and a written timeline. Do not place yourself in danger to collect evidence, and do not alter or delete relevant material. Victims should ask for an interpreter or other communication help when needed. They should also ask how the report is recorded and what practical next step is expected, while understanding that an investigation may take time. Common personal safety measures include protecting passwords, using two-factor authentication where available, checking payment requests, securing bicycles and vehicles, and being cautious with strangers who demand urgent action. Children and older people may need simple rules and a trusted contact person. If a person is in immediate danger, safety comes first. Move to a safer place, contact police or emergency services, and avoid confronting a dangerous person alone.
