Slovenia manages disasters through a national system called Civil Protection, or Civilna zaščita, together with fire and rescue services, police, medical teams, municipalities, and volunteer organizations. The national administration for protection and rescue coordinates important parts of this system. Many Slovenian fire brigades are voluntary units. They are trained and equipped for fires, road crashes, floods, storms, technical rescues, and other emergencies. Professional fire and rescue units support them, especially in larger towns and more complex incidents. The main emergency number is 112. It connects callers with help for fire, medical emergencies, accidents, rescue needs, and other immediate dangers. The police emergency number is 113, especially when urgent police action is needed. Floods are an important risk because rivers, heavy rain, and fast water can affect towns, roads, homes, and fields. Slovenia also has earthquake risk, particularly because parts of the country lie near active geological zones. Other possible hazards include severe winter weather, avalanches in mountain areas, landslides, falling trees, drought, forest fires, and accidents involving dangerous substances. The right response depends on the place, the warning, and the type of danger. The state, municipalities, local emergency services, and Civil Protection units divide responsibilities. During a large event, authorities may close roads, order evacuation, open shelters, organize food and water, and provide public instructions. People should follow official warnings, avoid blocked or dangerous areas, and help children, older people, and neighbors who need assistance. A battery-powered light, drinking water, basic medicine, important documents, and a way to receive warnings can be useful during an interruption of normal services. After a disaster, do not enter damaged buildings, touch fallen power lines, or drive through moving water. Report danger through 112, give the exact location, describe what happened, and follow instructions from rescuers and local authorities.
