Immigration law in Slovenia

Immigration law in Slovenia distinguishes between Slovenian citizens, citizens of the European Union and related states, and other foreigners. The rules can differ greatly depending on nationality, purpose of stay, length of stay, and family situation. The administrative unit, called an upravna enota, is a central local authority for many residence matters. Police, consular offices, employment authorities, and other public bodies can also have a role in entry, registration, work, or security checks. Short visits are usually handled through entry rules and, where required, a visa. A longer stay normally requires registration or a residence permit based on a recognized purpose such as work, study, family reunification, or another lawful reason. Citizens of the European Union, the European Economic Area, and Switzerland generally use a different residence framework from third-country nationals. They may have movement rights but still need to complete required registration for longer residence or particular activities. A third-country national may need a temporary residence permit, and work may involve a single permit that combines residence and employment authorization. The correct permit depends on the real purpose and must not be assumed from the job title alone. Applications normally require identity documents, proof of accommodation, health insurance or means of support where applicable, and evidence for the chosen purpose. Authorities may require official translations, certified copies, fingerprints, or additional checks. A permit usually carries conditions, and changing employer, address, study program, or purpose can require a new procedure or notification. A person should not assume that an existing permit automatically covers a new situation. Long-term residence, permanent residence, citizenship, removal, and international protection are separate legal areas. They have different conditions and authorities, so a person should identify the exact legal route before acting.
