Labor law in Slovenia

Labor law in Slovenia mainly governs the relationship between an employee and an employer. The central document is the employment contract, called a pogodba o zaposlitvi, which normally describes the work, place, pay, working time, and other important conditions. The Employment Relationship Act, known as Zakon o delovnih razmerjih or ZDR-1, forms the main legal framework. Collective agreements, internal rules, and special rules for particular sectors can add more protection or detail. An employee usually performs work personally and under the employer's direction. In return, the employer must provide agreed pay, respect working rights, keep required records, and protect health and safety at work. Working time, rest, leave, public holidays, sickness absence, and parental rights are regulated areas. Their exact application can depend on the contract, the sector, the collective agreement, and the employee's situation. Slovenian employment can be open-ended or fixed-term, and different forms of work have different legal effects. A service contract, student work, temporary agency work, or self-employment is not automatically the same as regular employment. Employment may end through agreement, expiry of a fixed term, resignation, dismissal, or another legally recognized reason. Notice, procedure, written documents, and protection against unlawful discrimination are important parts of this process. Disputes may involve unpaid wages, working time, leave, discrimination, workplace accidents, or an unlawful dismissal. The Labour Inspectorate can supervise certain obligations, while employment disputes may require a court, a union, a lawyer, or another qualified adviser. The practical meaning of labor law is that written evidence matters. Contracts, payslips, schedules, messages, medical documents, and dismissal letters can help show what happened and which right may have been affected.
