Transport in Sri Lanka

Buses form a broad public transport network connecting cities, towns, and villages. Services range from local stopping buses to longer-distance routes, and comfort and crowding vary. Trains connect several major corridors and can be useful for commuting or long journeys. Some routes are especially busy, and station information or local confirmation helps with planning. Three-wheelers, often called tuk-tuks, are common for short trips. Confirm the destination and whether the ride uses a meter or an agreed fare before starting. Taxis and app-based rides can provide clearer booking records and door-to-door travel where available. Vehicle supply and service coverage are less dependable outside busy urban areas. Traffic generally keeps to the left. Roads are shared by buses, cars, motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians, animals, and parked vehicles, so careful attention is essential. Driving requires the correct legal authorization, appropriate insurance, and confidence in local conditions. A foreign licence alone should not be assumed to be sufficient. Walking conditions vary greatly, and pavements may be missing, blocked, or uneven. Bright clothing, careful road crossing, and avoiding distraction improve safety. Heavy rain, flooding, landslides, public events, and traffic can disrupt routes. Leave extra time and keep an alternative way home in mind.
