History in São Tomé and Príncipe

São Tomé and Príncipe developed from Portuguese settlement and plantation colonization into a society shaped by sugar, cocoa, forced labor, migration, anticolonial politics and independence in 1975. The islands became an early Atlantic plantation and enslaved-labor center; later roças used contrato and serviçais labor after formal abolition. Historical interpretation requires comparing colonial records, local institutions, oral testimony, commemorations and material sites because accounts of Amador, Batepá and other memories can conflict.
