Apprenticeship in Sweden

In Sweden, an apprenticeship is mainly organised as a vocational pathway rather than as one separate national system. The Swedish term lärling describes a learner who spends a large part of the education in a workplace. The school or training provider still has responsibility for the education and assessment. Young people can choose a lärlingsutbildning within a vocational programme at upper secondary school, called gymnasieskola. Adults may also find apprenticeship-like workplace training through adult vocational education or labour-market programmes. The exact arrangement depends on the education provider and occupation. A learner studies general subjects and vocational subjects. The general subjects support communication, mathematics, safety and further learning. The vocational part teaches tools, methods, professional behaviour and the rules of the occupation. Workplace learning is called arbetsplatsförlagt lärande, often shortened to APL. During APL, the learner follows a planned schedule and works under supervision. The workplace gives practical experience, but the school remains involved in planning and follow-up. A typical process begins with choosing a vocational field, applying to a school or adult programme, and discussing workplace placement. The learner then alternates between school activities and workplace training. Teachers and workplace supervisors compare progress with the goals of the programme. Some occupations also use anställning, collective agreements or trade-specific certification. These arrangements are not identical to the school-based apprenticeship pathway. A learner should therefore ask whether the place is education, employment, or both. The main benefit is early contact with real work, equipment and colleagues. It can make learning easier for people who learn well by doing and may help build a professional network. The limits are that workplace quality can vary and that a placement may not teach every part of the occupation. Start by comparing vocational programmes, asking how much APL they include, and checking what qualification they lead to. Speak with the school, municipality or adult education provider before accepting a placement. Keep a record of tasks, feedback and completed learning goals.
