The Swedish school system begins with preschool, called förskola, for younger children. Preschool focuses on care, play, language, social development and learning through activities. It is separate from compulsory school, although it prepares children for the next stage. Children normally attend a compulsory preschool class called förskoleklass before grundskola. Grundskola is the main compulsory school and covers primary and lower secondary education. Teaching includes subjects such as Swedish, mathematics, English, science, social studies, arts, physical education and practical subjects. Compulsory school is usually organised by the municipality, but families may also choose an independent school called friskola. Municipal and independent schools follow national goals and curricula. Upper secondary education includes higher-education preparatory programmes and vocational programmes. Some pupils first attend introductory programmes if they need additional support before entering a national programme. Assessment becomes more formal as pupils progress through school. Teachers use national goals, classroom work and other evidence to assess knowledge. Schools also provide support when a pupil has difficulty reaching the expected learning goals. The school day includes lessons, breaks, meals and sometimes transport or activities arranged locally.
