Study in Sweden

Swedish higher education is provided mainly by universities, called universitet, and university colleges, called högskolor. Both can offer degree programmes and individual courses, although their research profiles and subject strengths may differ. The institution’s programme description shows the level, structure and qualification. Higher education is organised in first-cycle, second-cycle and third-cycle studies. Common first-cycle qualifications include the kandidat degree. Second-cycle study includes magister and master degrees, while third-cycle study leads toward research qualifications. Sweden also has professional programmes in fields such as teaching, engineering, medicine, law and other occupations. These programmes connect academic learning with professional requirements. The length and structure depend on the profession. Students receive credits called högskolepoäng, often shortened to hp. Credits describe the amount of study connected with a course or programme. A degree requires a defined combination of courses and, in many fields, an independent project called examensarbete. Teaching may include lectures, seminars, laboratory work, workshops, group assignments and individual study. Swedish institutions expect students to take responsibility for reading, preparation, time planning and participation. Assessment can involve written work, examinations, presentations, practical tasks or projects. The language of teaching may be Swedish, English or a combination. A student must check the language requirements and understand whether important information, placement work or assessment is in Swedish. Academic English can be useful, but everyday Swedish may still matter for life outside campus. Admission normally depends on previous education and programme-specific requirements. Applicants should check required subjects, language proof and any selection method before applying. Application routes, dates and conditions can change, so the responsible institution or official admission service should be consulted for current details. Student life includes libraries, student groups, study advisers, teachers and sometimes student unions. Ask about academic support, disability support, housing guidance and career services early. A realistic study plan should include independent work, rest and the practical costs of living.
