History of Switzerland

Present-day Switzerland did not come into being in a single day. Over time, different communities, cities, and rural areas formed alliances and agreed on shared interests. The Old Swiss Confederacy (Alte Eidgenossenschaft) was a loose network of communities with different rights and relationships. Stories about its origins are culturally important, but should not be confused with all historical facts. Conflicts across Europe, religious divisions, and power struggles also shaped the territories of Switzerland. Catholic and Reformed regions developed partly different political and cultural traditions. After periods of major upheaval, the modern federal state emerged in the 19th century. It brought together shared state institutions and far-reaching autonomy for the cantons. Industrialization, railways, tourism, and new forms of work changed cities and rural areas. Immigration and emigration were also part of the country’s development. Switzerland’s territory was spared some wars, but the country was never completely separate from international events. Trade, movements of refugees, political decisions, and economic ties connected it with its surroundings. In the 20th and 21st centuries, political and social rights were gradually expanded. History also shows that equality and participation were not achieved at the same time for all groups. History helps explain present-day differences between cantons and language regions. It also calls for a critical look at monuments, historical narratives, and the perspectives of people who were rarely heard in the past.
