History in Syria

The territory of present-day Syria contains evidence of Paleolithic and Neolithic life, including early settlement and agriculture around the Euphrates and Levant. Sites such as Tell Qaramel, Abu Hureyra, Jerf el-Ahmar and Tell Halaf are dated according to their individual finds and archaeological context. Bronze and Iron Age history includes Ebla at Tell Mardikh, Mari at Tell Hariri, Ugarit at Ras Shamra and Emar, alongside Amorite, Hurrian and Aramaean settings and the influence of Assyria, Babylonia, the Hittites and the Achaemenid Empire. These ancient political and cultural areas did not match the borders of the modern Syrian state. Hellenistic and Roman history includes the Seleucid period, Antioch, Apamea, Dura-Europos and Palmyra. Roman Syria began in 64 BCE, while Palmyra later formed a short-lived empire in the third century CE. Trade, multilingual communities and changing city networks connected the region to wider Mediterranean and Near Eastern worlds. Late Antique history includes Byzantine administration, Christianity, monasteries, urban development and conflicts between Byzantium and the Sasanian Empire. The Arab conquest in the seventh century brought gradual linguistic and religious change rather than one simple break. Medieval Syria included Umayyad Damascus as the capital from 661 to 750, followed by Abbasid rule and the influence of Hamdanids, Fatimids, Mirdasids, Seljuks, Zengids, Ayyubids and Mamluks. Crusader frontier zones, chronicles, waqf documents, coins, buildings and archaeological remains provide different types of evidence. The Ottoman conquest in 1516 introduced provincial structures such as eyalets, vilayets and sanjaks. Damascus became a major Hajj pilgrimage centre, Aleppo a major trading city, and local notables and communities interacted with tax and military administration. The Tanzimat reforms of 1839–1876, the violence in Damascus in 1860, missions, trade and European influence shaped the nineteenth century. The First World War and the Arab Revolt ended Ottoman rule in 1918. The San Remo settlement in 1920 preceded the French Mandate from 1920 to 1946, during which separate administrative entities included the States of Aleppo and Damascus, the Alawite State and the Jabal Druze State. The transfer of Alexandretta, also called the Sanjak of Alexandretta, to Turkey in 1939 remains disputed in Syrian historical memory. The Great Syrian Revolt of 1925–1927 connected local resistance with wider debates about rule and sovereignty. The Syrian Republic became independent in 1946. Coups followed in 1949, Syria joined the United Arab Republic in 1958 and left it in 1961, and the Ba'ath Party took power in 1963. Hafez al-Assad ruled from 1971 to 2000, followed by Bashar al-Assad from 2000 until the fall of his government on 8 December 2024. The uprising that began in 2011 developed into an armed conflict involving displacement, foreign intervention, ISIS or Daesh, a Kurdish-led administration, opposition forces and government-controlled areas. These actors and administrations created changing territorial realities that historians must date and describe precisely. From 2025 into 2026, Syria has been in a transitional and reconstruction period. Transitional justice, missing-persons documentation, constitutional questions, elections and territorial integration have become major historical fields, while the political order remains unsettled. Claims about current institutions or borders therefore require a clear date. The Syrian Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums (DGAM), universities, archives, museums, local historians and international bodies such as UNESCO, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM) contribute to historical and documentary work. Sources include inscriptions, cuneiform and alphabetic texts, coins, architecture, Ottoman registers, Mandate records, newspapers, oral histories and United Nations reports. Translation, provenance, propaganda, dating and preservation can affect how each source should be assessed. Access to formal research is usually tied to an institution, project, site permission or security clearance, and access varies sharply by region. There is no single nationwide fee schedule or deadline for historical research. Conflict has damaged sites and collections and has contributed to looting, illegal excavation and loss of evidence. UNESCO World Heritage sites in Syria include the Ancient City of Damascus, the Ancient City of Aleppo, the Ancient City of Bosra, the Ancient Villages of Northern Syria, Crac des Chevaliers and Qal'at Salah El-Din, and the Site of Palmyra; several have been endangered. Oral history and community memory remain valuable, although their legal or evidentiary weight depends on the specific use. Syrian, local, religious, diaspora and international memories may interpret the same event differently.
