Study in Tajikistan

Tajikistan’s higher education system includes state, private, international and joint institutions. Universities, academies and institutes may also have branches, faculties, colleges, research centres or technology parks. Regular programs require state accreditation and attestation. Teaching is mainly in Tajik or Russian, with English, German, French and Arabic relevant in some programs. The National Testing Center (ММТ) registers applicants, conducts ИМД, scales results and supports competitive allocation. Applicants generally enter after general secondary education, initial vocational education or secondary vocational education. The 11th-grade pathway uses four test subjects and is the main pathway into higher education. The pathway after the 9th grade mainly leads to secondary vocational education rather than directly to higher education. Art, sport, design, architecture, sculpture and religious programs may require additional institutional examinations. The MGU branch in Dushanbe and the University of Central Asia may use additional entrance requirements. Applicants select a specialty, institution, study form, funding type and priority. In 2026, an applicant may select up to 12 specialty combinations within one National Testing Center cluster. The five clusters cover natural and technical fields; economics and geography; philology, education and art; social sciences and law; and medicine, biology and sport. Minimum and passing scores are set for each year, and the final allocation depends on competition and the selected options. Typical documents include an identity document, an attestation or diploma with its supplement and, where required, proof that a foreign qualification is equivalent. Registration and testing may be conducted in Tajik or Russian. A state higher education institution may provide a Tajik citizen with one tuition-free study opportunity through the фармоиши давлатӣ, the state admission order, but places are competitive and not automatic. Places outside that order are paid under a contract. Private, international and joint institutions set fees under their institutional contracts. The annual admission plan separates tuition-free and paid places, and fees depend on the institution, program and study form. In 2026, the ИМД service fee is 370 somoni for applicants with an 11th-grade, initial vocational or secondary vocational background, and 320 somoni for applicants with a 9th-grade background; re-registration costs 30 somoni. Study uses a credit system in which one credit represents 24 hours. A bachelor’s program normally lasts at least four years and requires 240 credits. An integrated specialist and bachelor’s program requires at least five years and 300 credits, while a medical specialist program requires six years and 420 credits. A master’s program normally requires at least two years and 120 credits. A PhD requires 180 credits, including research, a dissertation, teaching or professional practice and final attestation. Students may study full time, evening, part time, by distance learning, in a dual form or through an external-study arrangement. Distance programs use information and communication technology and include examinations with an in-person component. Individual study plans, elective subjects and an academic adviser help organize progression. Programs may include practical training, coursework, a final thesis and state final attestation. Annual holidays must total at least seven weeks, including at least seven weeks, including at least two winter weeks. The Ministry of Education and Science sets education policy, state standards, accreditation rules and general admission procedures. The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade contributes to the annual admission plan, while the government and Majlisi Oli establish the wider legal and financial framework. Higher education institutions manage programs, teaching, institutional examinations and student administration. Regular scholarships follow Government Resolution 273. Tajik citizens studying full time may also qualify for a Presidential Scholarship based on strong academic or research performance. The reviewed sources do not establish a general national tertiary student-loan scheme comparable to Germany’s BAföG. Graduates may enter employment or continue to a master’s program, internship, ординатура or residency, аспирантура, doctoral study or postdoctoral study, depending on the qualification and field. A degree does not automatically guarantee a job or a place at the next academic level.
