Labor market in Timor-Leste

Timor-Leste's labor market combines a small formal public and private sector with extensive informal work, especially in agriculture, forestry and fishing. The 2022 Census counted 313,539 people in the labor force among 873,931 people aged 15 and over; 304,563 were employed and 8,976 unemployed. Participation was 35.9%, with 64.1% outside the labor force, and access differs sharply by sex, age, municipality, education and rural location. Jobs, wages and training are concentrated in Dili, while most workers are self-employed or work outside formal protections.
