Art in Uzbekistan appears in buildings, clothing, household objects, public spaces, performances, and museums. It can be made by trained artists, craft specialists, families, or community groups. Historic architecture is known for courtyards, domes, arches, tilework, carved surfaces, and geometric or plant-based ornament. Religious, educational, civic, and residential buildings each have their own purposes. Ceramics are an important craft, with local workshops known for shaped vessels, painted decoration, and practical tableware. Designs and colors can differ by region and workshop tradition. Suzani is a famous textile tradition involving embroidered cloth, often made with repeated flowers, leaves, circles, or other symbolic patterns. It may be used for decoration, gifts, household textiles, or ceremonial settings. Wood carving, metalwork, carpet making, jewelry, paper decoration, and miniature painting show the value placed on patient handwork. Some crafts are both artistic objects and useful goods. Music and dance are also forms of art in Uzbekistan. Performances may use instruments such as the doira, rubab, dutar, or other regional instruments, with styles varying across communities. Contemporary artists combine local motifs with painting, photography, design, installation, film, and digital media. They may explore memory, identity, urban life, nature, or social change. Art supports cultural education, tourism, family traditions, and livelihoods. Its limits include unequal access to training, pressure to make souvenirs quickly, and the risk that complex traditions become simplified.
