Employment in Vietnam is the work relationship between a person and an employer. The worker performs agreed duties, and the employer provides pay and follows the agreed conditions. The main document is the labor contract, called a hợp đồng lao động. It normally describes the job, workplace, salary, working time, leave, and the way the relationship can end. Contracts may be for an indefinite period or for a fixed period. A probation period may come before regular employment, and its conditions should be clear before work begins. Pay is usually made as a salary or wage. A worker should understand the basic pay, possible allowances, overtime rules, payment date, and deductions before accepting a job. Formal employment can connect a worker to social insurance, health insurance, and unemployment insurance. These systems help with events such as illness, maternity, retirement, or loss of work, subject to their own rules. Employers commonly handle payroll records, insurance contributions, personal income tax procedures, and internal work rules. Workers should keep contracts, pay records, and important notices. Working time, weekly rest, public holidays, leave, workplace safety, and protection from unfair treatment are important parts of the employment relationship. Special rules may apply to young workers, pregnant workers, dangerous work, and certain professions. Employment can end through resignation, the end of a fixed-term contract, agreement between the parties, or an employer decision allowed by the applicable rules. Notice and final payments should be checked carefully. The first practical step is to compare the job offer with the written contract.
