Unemployment in Vietnam

Unemployment in Vietnam is not only the absence of a job. It also includes the practical problems that follow job loss, such as lost income, uncertainty, and the need to find a new role. A worker may lose a job because a contract ends, a business reduces staff, a workplace closes, or the worker resigns. The reason and the previous insurance history can affect available support. Unemployment insurance is called bảo hiểm thất nghiệp, or BHTN. For eligible workers, it can provide temporary income support and services connected with finding work or improving skills. Employment service centers help connect job seekers with vacancies, advice, career information, and sometimes training or other employment programs. Their role is different from that of an individual employer. Many Vietnamese workers do not have a fully formal employment relationship. They may work in agriculture, family businesses, small shops, construction, transport, or online and casual work, where insurance-based support may be limited. Underemployment is also important. A person may have work but too few hours, low and unstable income, or duties that do not use their skills. During unemployment, useful documents include the labor contract, termination notice, identity documents, payment records, and insurance information. Missing documents can make it harder to explain the previous job. A practical job search combines several routes. These can include former colleagues, local networks, employment services, professional groups, direct applications, and learning a skill that local employers need. People should be careful with job offers that require large upfront payments, hide the employer's identity, or promise unusually easy income. A written description of the job and pay is an important basic safeguard.
