Labor market in Zambia

Zambia’s labour market combines formal wage employment with a much larger informal economy, own-account work and household work. In the 2024 Labour Force Survey, 3,972,883 people were employed, while informal employment accounted for 71.2% of employment. Agriculture, wholesale and retail, mining, education, manufacturing, construction, transport, tourism and digital services shape opportunities, but access and earnings differ sharply by education, gender, province and urban or rural location.
