Languages in Croatia

The main language of Croatia is Croatian, locally called hrvatski jezik. It is used in public administration, most schools, national media, and much of working life. Croatian is a South Slavic language written with the Latin alphabet. Its spelling closely reflects pronunciation, but noun cases, grammatical gender, and changing word endings require practice. Related languages from neighboring countries may be widely understood in everyday communication.
