Languages in Jordan

Language life in Jordan has more than one layer. People usually speak a local form of Levantine Arabic in ordinary conversation and use Modern Standard Arabic for many formal, written, educational, and public purposes. Jordanian Arabic varies by region, family background, and social setting. A learner does not need to master every variation, but should expect everyday speech to sound different from textbook Arabic. Modern Standard Arabic connects Jordan with formal Arabic used across the Arab world. It is especially useful for reading, writing, official documents, schoolwork, news, and prepared speeches. English is the main foreign language taught in schools. Its practical importance is high in tourism, medicine, engineering, information technology, higher education, international business, and work with global organisations. Other languages are present through minority communities, migration, diplomacy, trade, and private education. Their use is more limited and depends strongly on the learner’s family, workplace, or study goals. Language learning can happen in schools, universities, cultural centres, private institutes, community programmes, online courses, and conversation with local speakers. Course quality depends on teaching, practice time, class size, and the match between the course and the learner’s goal. A certificate can show that a course or test was completed, but it does not replace practical communication. Speaking, listening, reading, and writing should be practised separately because progress in one skill does not guarantee progress in the others. For newcomers, a mix of basic Jordanian Arabic and formal Arabic is often most useful. Learners who study or work in an English-heavy field may need a parallel English plan.
