Transport in Luxembourg

The Ministère de la Mobilité et des Travaux publics (MMTP) sets national transport policy. The Administration des transports (ATP), CFL, RGTR, AVL, TICE and Luxtram S.A. provide or coordinate major services, while SNCA handles vehicle and driving administration. mobiliteit.lu, Geoportail.lu and provider information systems show timetables, connections, disruptions and transport facilities. Public transport covers nationwide bus services, urban AVL and TICE buses, regional RGTR and CFL-Bus services, cross-border RGTR connections, Luxembourg City's tram and special services for people with reduced mobility. Tram Line 1 has connected Findel/Luxembourg Airport with the Stadium since 2 March 2025. It covers about 16 kilometres, has 24 stations and offers 10 interchange points. The Pfaffenthal–Kirchberg funicular is free, takes about 63 seconds over 200 metres and overcomes a height difference of about 40 metres. It provides access for wheelchairs, pushchairs, bicycles and luggage. There is no general ticket charge for national bus, tram, funicular and standard-class train journeys, whether the traveler is a resident, cross-border commuter or tourist. First-class train travel remains chargeable. CFL operates a rail network radiating across most of Luxembourg and connecting Germany, Belgium and France. International rail services include TGV connections to Paris and Strasbourg. Luxembourg Airport at Findel is the country's international airport. Access includes the A1, AVL lines 6 and 16 and Tram Line 1. Luxair carries passengers and Cargolux focuses on freight. National journeys and Greater Region connections are excluded from compensation on the cited official basis, so the specific service and ticket must be checked. The Ministère de l'Economie handles air passenger rights. Driving on public roads requires a valid licence and the vehicle documents required for the vehicle and journey. Modu 2.0 and the National Mobility Plan 2035 promote public transport, active travel, rail, tram and P+R; the plan targets a 40 percent increase in journeys compared with 2017. The national energy and climate plan targets 49 percent electric vehicles by the end of 2030. The Chargy network is legally planned around 800 public charging stations with two charging points each, including 88 SuperChargy stations. Timetables, disruption notices, parking conditions, cross-border fares and driving or registration requirements should be verified for the actual journey because responsibilities and rules differ by commune, provider and foreign section.
