Apprenticeship in Slovenia

In Slovenia, apprenticeship is called vajeništvo. It is part of the vocational education system and is mainly linked with srednje poklicno izobraževanje, often shortened to SPI. An apprentice learns general subjects, occupational theory and practical skills. Learning takes place both in a vocational school and in a company or another approved training organisation. The employer gives practical training in a real work environment. The school teaches the wider knowledge needed for the occupation, including safety, communication and basic professional understanding. A training agreement sets out the main duties of the apprentice, the school and the employer. The apprentice must attend lessons, follow safety rules, practise skills and complete the required assessments. Apprenticeships can prepare people for occupations in areas such as manufacturing, construction, food work, services and other crafts. The exact occupations available can change, so the chosen school and employer are important. Slovenian vocational education also includes school-based programmes. These usually provide practical training through school workshops, training centres and periods with employers, but the balance between school and workplace may differ from an apprenticeship. Progress is shown through school assessments, practical demonstrations and final examinations or other completion requirements. A completed programme can support entry into work and may also allow further education through an appropriate route. The main advantages are early work experience, contact with employers and learning by doing. Limits can include dependence on the quality of the workplace, fewer general subjects than in an academic programme and the need to choose an occupation before all career options are known.
