Slovenia's learning system connects education for children and young people with further study and lifelong learning for adults. School education includes preschool options, a nine-year osnovna šola and several types of secondary education. After compulsory schooling, learners can choose general, technical or vocational programmes. Apprenticeship combines school learning with practical training at an employer, while school-based vocational programmes keep more of the learning in an educational institution. Higher education includes universities, faculties, academies, professional institutions and higher vocational colleges. Academic programmes generally prepare learners for further study and research, while professionally focused programmes place more emphasis on applied knowledge. Adult learners can use professional courses, language learning, digital training, formal education and national vocational qualification routes to gain new skills or document existing ones. Language affects access to education and everyday participation. Slovenian, or slovenščina, is the main language of public life and education. Italian and Hungarian have special official status in areas where the respective communities traditionally live. Foreign-language learning is also part of education and continuing development. When choosing a learning path, compare the entry requirements, teaching language, practical experience, qualification level, duration and connection to the intended occupation or further study.
