School in Slovenia

Children in Slovenia may attend preschool, called vrtec, before entering compulsory school. Preschool supports play, language, social development and early learning, but it is separate from the compulsory school system. Compulsory education takes place in the nine-year osnovna šola. It is usually organised in three three-year periods, with teaching becoming more specialised as pupils grow older. Primary school includes core subjects such as Slovenian, mathematics, science, social studies, arts, physical education and at least one foreign language. Schools also provide support for pupils with different learning needs. After osnovna šola, learners choose a secondary programme. A gimnazija gives broad academic preparation, while technical and vocational programmes connect learning more directly with occupations. Secondary education may lead to a general matura, a poklicna matura or another vocational completion route, depending on the programme. These outcomes affect access to later study and should be checked before choosing a programme. School life includes lessons, homework, assessments, class communities and cooperation between teachers and families. Attendance, school rules and respectful behaviour are important parts of everyday education. The school language is generally Slovenian. In areas with Italian or Hungarian communities, schools may use Italian or Hungarian under special local arrangements, and pupils may learn additional languages. The system offers several paths rather than one single definition of success. Academic study, technical education, vocational learning and later adult education can all support a meaningful working life.
