Study in Slovenia

Higher education in Slovenia is provided by different types of institutions, including universities, faculties, academies and independent higher education institutions. Higher vocational colleges, called višje strokovne šole, are more practically oriented and form a related post-secondary route. University study is organised within recognised study programmes. Many programmes follow the common European structure of first-cycle, second-cycle and third-cycle study, although the content and names differ by field. A faculty, akademija or other institution teaches one or more subject areas. The institution sets the curriculum, examinations, practical work and academic expectations for its programmes. Admission normally depends on completing an appropriate secondary education route and meeting the conditions of the chosen programme. The type of secondary completion examination can affect which programmes a student may enter. Study includes lectures, seminars, independent reading, assignments, projects, laboratory work or practical placements. Students are expected to organise much of their time themselves. Assessment may include examinations, written work, presentations, practical demonstrations and a final thesis or project. The exact balance depends on the field and programme. Students may have a formal student status with rights and duties connected to their studies. They must still follow institutional rules, complete enrolment steps and manage their academic workload responsibly. Higher education can improve subject knowledge, professional access and personal independence. It also requires time, planning, language ability and realistic consideration of living, travel and study costs.
