Languages in Slovenia

Slovenian is the national language of Slovenia. It is used in most schools, public services, media, workplaces and everyday communication, although people may also use other languages at home or in their communities. Slovenian has several regional varieties, but the standard language is used for formal writing, education and official communication. Learning standard Slovenian helps with study, work and dealing with public institutions. Italian and Hungarian have a special official role in designated areas with traditional Italian and Hungarian communities. Local schools and public services in these areas can therefore follow bilingual or otherwise adapted arrangements. Many people in Slovenia learn English as a foreign language. German, Italian, Croatian, Serbian and other languages may also be useful because of travel, neighbouring countries, family connections or work. Schools normally teach a foreign language and may offer additional language learning. The exact programme and language choices depend on the school and the learner’s education path. Language ability has several parts: understanding, speaking, reading and writing. A person may be strong in one part and still need practice in another, especially for formal Slovenian. New residents can often begin with everyday Slovenian phrases and then build vocabulary for housing, health, school, work and public administration. Practice with real tasks is usually more useful than memorising isolated word lists. Respectful communication matters in multilingual Slovenia. Ask which language is preferred, speak clearly, and use an interpreter or language support when an important message is not understood.
